HSM #7: Ett kattunförkläde – A late 18th century apron

HSM: So this is a late submission for the Accessorise challenge – the deadline was 31st of July, but since I made it for the challenge I’m making it an entry anyway…

Det här med att sy plagg och dräkter från alla historiska perioder är något jag verkligen tycker om och jag har en dröm om att ha minst en dräkt från varje århundrade, år 1000 och framåt. Vissa tidsperioder får större fokus än andra – som sent 1300-tal vilket är en stor personlig favorit. Andra perioder som jag lägger ner mycket tid och forskning på är sent 1700-tal, allmogekläder cirka 1840 och det tidiga 1910-talet. Min kunskap när det gäller 1700-talskläder har utvecklats enormt sedan jag gjorde mitt första försök till dräkt och jag måste läsa in och lära mig mycket mer innan jag börjar anse mig kunnig inom perioden. Kort sagt – jag är fortfarande en nybörjare på sent 1700-tal.

I love to make garments and costumes from all periods of history and I do have a dream of having at least one whole costume from every century, year 1000 and forward. Some periods are given more attention than others, like the late 14th century which is a big love for me. Other periods that I spend a lot of time researching for are late 18th century, 1840’s commoners clothing and the early 19-teens. My knowledge on 18th century clothing and historical sewing has improved a lot since I made my first attempt on the period and I know that I want to learn even more before I consider myself good at this period. In short – I’m still very much a beginner on late 18th century clothing.

En av de saker som jag behövt länge till min 1700-talsdräkt är ett förkläde, men jag har inte riktigt kunnat bestämma mig för vilken sorts förkläde jag skulle göra. Jag började med att kolla runt på nätet efter förkläden, men hittade bara utländska förkläden. Då vände jag mig till den fantastiska resursen Digitalt Museum och gjorde en sökning där på förkläden från 1700-talet. Klicka in här och se vad jag hittade. Så himla många fina saker! Jag tyckte om ett förkläde mer än de andra:

One of the things I’ve known that I needed for my 18th century kit was an apron, I just couldn’t decide what type of apron to make. I started looking around for aprons online but found only foreign aprons. Then I turned to the wonderful resource Digitalt Museum and did a search there for 18th century aprons. Look here what I found. So many lovely things! I liked one apron more than the others:

Det är ett fantastiskt kattunförkläde. Tyget är troligtvis importerat och för att göra förklädet har de använt två våder, ihopsydda i mitten. Det är daterat till mellan 1780-1800. Nederkanten är 142 centimeter och förklädet är 94 cm på höjden. Överkantens bredd nämns inte, men andra förkläden från tiden är mellan 45-51 cm breda. Det de däremot nämner är att midjelinningen fortsätter ut i tampar på 14 cm från varje sida vilka avslutas med smala bomullsband. Det är rynkat mot midjelinningen vid sidorna, men mitten är slät. Om man tittar nära uppe i vänstra hörnet av förklädet så ser man sömsmånen genom linningstyget gömt därinne.

It’s a fantastic apron made of printed cotton. The fabric is probably imported and to make the apron they have used two widths, sewn together in the middle. It’s dated between 1780-1800. The bottom measures to 142 cm and it is 94 cm long. The width of the top isn’t mentioned, but other aprons from the same time has a top width between 45-51 cm. What they do mention is that the waistband continues for 14 cm from each side and is finished with a narrow cotton ribbon. It is gathered to the waistband on the sides, but the middle is flat. If you look closely on the upper left corner you can see the seam allowance that is sewn and locked into the waistband.

I think it will look fantastic with pocket hoops under.

Jag har sytt mitt förkläde enligt måtten jag nämnt ovan, men jag har inte två delar i mitt förkläde. Istället – för att komma så nära originalet som möjligt i utseende – har jag sytt en falsk söm och pressat den åt ena sidan. Som band använde jag ett linneband jag vävde för ett par år sedan på bandvävstol. Att sy ett kattunförkläde gav mig den perfekta ursäkten att äntligen få handla lite från Durán Textiles – tyger som jag suktat efter i ett par år nu. För er som inte hört talas om dem innan så säljer de reproducerade tyger från framförallt 1700-talet. Mitt tyg är Veronica i brunt.

I’ve sewn my apron according to the measurments mentioned above, but the main body of the apron isn’t sewn of two pieces. Instead – to come closer to the apperance of the extant apron – I’ve sewn a false seam in the middle which I just pressed to one side. For the ribbon ties I used a heddle woven linen ribbon that I wove a couple of years ago. I was happy to be making an apron of printed cotton since that gave me the perfect excuse to order some fabric from Durán Textiles, fabrics which I’ve been drooling over for some years now. For those of you that haven’t heard about them – they sell reproduced fabrics, mainly from the 18th century. Mine is the fabric Veronica in brown.

What the item is: An apron

Notions: 150 cm of a heddle woven linen ribbon, linen thread 60/2, wax.
How historically accurate is it? About 95 %, I’d say. It’s sewn with period techniques, the print is period, the materials are period except for the fabric being machine woven. It had fantastic selvages though!

First worn: For the photos on 11 of August with my modern clothes.
Total cost: The fabric cost 350 SEK, which is about 40 USD, 37 EUR or 26 GBP.
